How to Make Stain for a Powder Horn
- 1). Smooth any rough patches or protrusions on the outside of the horn using a piece of fine-grit sandpaper. The stain will apply easier and dry faster on a smooth surface.
- 2). Rub the entire horn with a pad of #0000 steel wool using a rapid circular motion. Wipe the horn completely free of dust using a damp cloth.
- 3). Mix your container of wood stain thoroughly using a paint stir stick. Cover your work area with several sheets of old newspaper.
- 4). Dip your paintbrush into the stain and scrape the excess off on the inside lip of the can. Brush the stain onto the horn. Continue in this fashion until the desired area on the horn is covered in a smooth coat of stain.
- 5). Allow the stain to dry for the time suggested on the container. For a deeper color, apply a second layer of stain to the horn.
