How to Build a Footpath

    • 1). Lay out the course of the footpath. It could have multiple directions, depending on the size of the garden.

    • 2). Clear the course. Rake away leaves and dig out any large bumps. The path does not need to be completely level, but the height variation should not be more than 2 inches. For instance, a small tree root that will protrude above the footpath should be removed.

    • 3). Lay the weed-proof fabric on the course and stake it to the ground. As the fabric will be the width of the path, a 4-foot width is recommended.

    • 4). Lay the treated boards along both edges of the fabric so they create a 4-inch wall. Hammer the wooden stakes into the ground next to the boards on the outside of the path so the boards will not fall outward. The path should now look like a black carpet (the weed proof fabric) flanked with side boards.

    • 5). Pour the pea gravel onto the path until the gravel is at least 2 inches deep. Level the gravel with the rake.
