    • 1). Cover the stairs with a drop cloth to protect carpet or wood surfaces from dripping paint. Tape or tack it down securely so that it doesn't slip or slide when you walk on it. Put on safety glasses.

    • 2). Attach the small trim roller to the extension pole. Roll the roller in the primer until it is covered. Go to the landing, set your feet securely and raise the pole to the ceiling. Roll the primer slowly onto the ceiling at the edges and into the corners, stopping and rolling in fresh paint when you begin to run out.

    • 3). Bring your supplies up to the second floor. Test the balcony rail for security before leaning on it. Remove the trim roller and attach the 9-inch roller to the extension pole. Set your feet and roll primer onto the ceiling, blending it with the wet edge you just rolled on with the trim roller. Cover the entire surface.

    • 4). Wash out the rollers and paint tray and set them aside to dry. Let the primer dry for two hours, four hours if it's humid in your house.

    • 5). When the primer is dry, repeat Steps 2 and 3 with latex paint. When the ceiling is covered, roll it again from an opposite 90 degrees to ensure complete coverage of plaster, particularly if the surface is textured.

    • 6). Wash out the rollers and paint tray, cover remaining paint and primer cans securely, and remove the drop cloth.
