    • 1). Depending on the number of buffalo in your image, it might be a good idea to sketch out the scene including any major light sources. Use a light pencil to make lines differentiating color patterns on the buffalo. Darker areas should be separated from lighter areas. At this point, sectioning is important.

    • 2). Paint most of the furry area on the animal while leaving some pencil marks for future note. Use a solid color and create a base coat that is a little lighter than you desire the coat to be overall.

    • 3). Cover the sections that need to be darker with a deeper shade of the original color. Dark browns with a little bit of orange can be effective for this.

    • 4). When adding finer details, allow the paint to dry before adding each layer of paint. Even when using a thin brush to add creases or misplaced hairs in the animal's furs, allow each color to settle. (Learn how to paint pets in oils.)
