We can get some pretty stinky stains on our laundry - sweat, mold, cigarette smoke, mildew, pet odors, diesel fuel, diaper stains and more. Sometimes, washing is just not enough to remove the odor. What to do? OdorXit might just show odor the door.
OdorXit Concentrate
OdorXit Concentrate can be used on any washable fabric and is safe to use with plain laundry detergent. It should not be combined with detergent that contains additional products like bleach or fabric softeners.
The product must be diluted with water. Normal dilution rate is one ounce of OdorXit concentrate to thirty ounces of water.
For use in a washer - it is safe in regular or high-efficiency machines - add several caps full of Odorxit® Concentrate to the washing machine at the beginning of the wash cycle with the normal dose of detergent. Allow the wash cycle to complete but delay the first spin cycle for 30 to 60 minutes. After the wash/soak time, finish the normal cycles.
There are some odors that OdorXit alone cannot eliminate completely:
- wet dog smell from dogs, upholstery, fabric or carpet
- tobacco or fire smoke odor. OdorXit Concentrate has been proven to be very effective in eliminating smoke odors when used in conjunction with detergent because the odor causing molecules are oil based.
- large contaminations of gasoline and diesel fuel. Small amounts of gasoline and diesel fuel are very responsive to OdorXit Concentrate.
- extensive urine odor in carpeting/padding/flooring. Small areas of urine odor can be eliminated with product use.
Product ingredients are not listed on the product or on the website. However, you can access the Material Safety Data Sheet information here. The concentrate is non-toxic if ingested or inhaled.
OdorXit is available at some retailers; however the main avenue of purchase is online. It is available in 64 ounce, 16 ounce and 4 ounce sizes.
The OdorXit Company
OdorXit has been offered for sale on the internet since 1999. The products and name are the registered trademark Listening Systems Incorporated. The products are made in the United States in Fairfield, Ohio near Hamilton and Cincinnati. The company is a mail order business selling products world-wide.
OdorXit offers four products:
- OdorXit Concentrate: odor elimination product for flooring, furniture, bedding, in automobiles, on cement and clothing. OdorXit Concentrate must be diluted with water (normally 1 part concentrate to 30 parts water but never more than 1 to 15) for it to work properly.
- OdorXit Magic: odor neutralizer product for airborne odors. The product is dispersed by pump spray as a mist. OdorXit Magic can be used on fabrics that can not be washed such as drapes, upholstery and carpets.
- OdorXit Air Quality Manager ClO2: 30 Day odor elimination system using chlorine dioxide gas to oxidize the source of the odors. The product is dispersed through a contained packet. The air quality manager can be used in basements, cars and enclosed spaces to eliminate mold and mildew and odors.
- OdorXit AvanFlex ClO2 Sanitizer: In this system, odors are eliminated by chlorine dioxide gas dissolved in water. A packet is submersed in 5 gallons of tepid water for 15 minutes to activate the process. It is usable for 20 to 30 Days. CLO2 spray can be used in any area that is water tolerant and will not bleach or discolor water safe materials.
Dry Clean Only Fabrics and OdorXit
For odors on dry clean only fabrics, spray with OdorXit Concentrate diluted 1 part concentrate 30 parts water. These odors are usually eliminated with one or two applications. Mist the garment - do not overwet - and allow the solution to dry over night. Test the garment for odor by lightly spraying the area with water. If the odor returns re-treat with the OdorXit. When the odor is completely eliminated, dry clean and press the garment.
For garments that have been exposed to mold or mildew growth and retain the odor, the OdorXit ClO2 product is most effective. Because ClO2 (chlorine dioxide) is a gas, it does not effect the material or fabric as liquid products do. In the case of mold or mildew, it kills the spores and mold fungus; in most cases reducing it to dust. For body odors, it attacks and kills the bacteria causing the odor. Follow the directions carefully and, if used in an enclosed closet the problem should be eliminated in one to four days.
About Laundry Recommendation
I gave OdorXit Concentrate a try with my son's t-shirts that held a strong perspiration odor. These are his "heavy lifting clothes" that get quite sweaty. Washing and drying them gets rid of the soil but the body odor can reappear when they get wet again.
I tested the concentrate in two ways. I followed the directions for adding the product directly to the wash. The scent of the concentrate was pleasant enough but has a slightly industrial scent. After washing and drying, the industrial scent was diminished - however, the body odor remained. I then diluted it according to directions - 1:30 ratio - and soaked one smelly t-shirt for two hours. After a second wash and dry, unfortunately the odor was still present.
I will admit that these shirts were old and so was the odor. I did wash my dog's bedding with the product and it came out fresh and clean.
If you have persistent problems with odors, such as urine or sick bed laundry, I would give OdorXit a try. Start with a small bottle and see if it freshens your odor problems.
