Mascara Stain Removal
- To remove mascara from clothing, first gently scrape off as much of the mascara as possible, then treat the stain with a stain remover. Rub with liquid detergent or grease-removing dish-washing liquid. Finally, wash with fabric-safe bleach in the hottest water recommended for the fabric. Air-dry and check to be sure the stain is removed. Repeat the procedure if any of the stain remains.
- To remove mascara from carpet or upholstery, first check to see if the mascara is waterproof. You might be able to remove non-waterproof mascara with a simple application of eye makeup remover.
For non-waterproof mascara: First, gently scrape off as much of the mascara as possible. Apply makeup remover to a clean, white cloth and gently dab (don't rub) at the stain, working to carefully lift the stain from the carpet or upholstery. If this does not work, next try a grease-removing dish-washing liquid, again using a dabbing and blotting motion, never rubbing. Follow up by sponging the area with clean water. Blot dry.
For waterproof mascara: To remove waterproof mascara, you can try the above method, but you may need to resort to stronger stuff. Again, gently scrape off as much of the mascara as possible. Then, sponge on a small amount of dry-cleaning solvent. Gently dab at the stain, working to carefully lift the stain from the carpet or upholstery. Next, clean off the solvent with a gentle detergent (1 tsp. of detergent mixed with 1 cup of lukewarm water). Again, gently clean the area, then sponge with clean water. Blot dry.
