How to Make a Great Stereo System

    • 1). Use a receiver that is capable of managing the various components of your sound system. The receiver is the central component. Every other part of the system is relayed to the speakers through the receiver.

    • 2). Add an amplifier. An amp will boost the signal and allow you to power larger speakers. Besides adding volume, a more powerful signal will provide clearer content. Clear and powerful signals mean that subtle parts of music can be enjoyed without having to raise the volume of the stereo.

    • 3). Include an equalizer. And equalizer, or EQ, allows you to customize the output of your stereo to your specific preferences. You will also be able to adjust the levels based on the type of music. Some receivers have preset tone-setting, but an equalizer gives you the ability to make finer and more-personalized adjustments.

    • 4). Install a crossover. Crossovers are used to divert varying signal tones to the appropriate speakers. Without a crossover, the same signal is sent to all of your speakers. With a crossover, you can dedicate a certain tone to a speaker or group of speakers. This delegation will allow the proper use of speakers, create a more efficient stereo system and produce a clearer sound.

    • 5). Use specific speakers. Instead of using two or four tower speakers, a great stereo system will have many (5 or more) specialized speakers. The more precise you can be with the role and expectations of a speaker, the better you can divert the intended signal tones for those speakers. Standalone subwoofers sound better than subs that are a part of a tower speaker because you can send only the lowest tones to the sub, whereas the tower speaker's subwoofer receives the signal for the midrange and tweeters.

    • 6). Use quality speaker wires and other connectors. The signals that are transferred to your components is lost on the way -- always. The amount of lost strength can be reduced by using quality cables. The better speaker cables and A/V digital component cables are usually more expensive. You can find cables made of quality materials, that are not of a famous brand, and save money without sacrificing fidelity.
