We all know that antique closets are mostly made of wood. You hardly come across those made of stone but it does not mean they do not exist. A closet has to be functional and it hardly matters what it is made of, but wood is considered to be of artistic value as well and so the most commonly used. When you think of building wooden closets you have a huge range of textures, hardness, grains and color to suit your taste. This could be one reason that antique closets were made of wood! Although today there are a wide variety of material available but still wood is given preference. This is indicative of the strong pull that tradition has on the mindset of people. Whatever the reason, it is a fact that above all wood is the material preferred not only by our ancestors but even by the modern man.

Now If you were to look at an antique closet, it would be one huge structure crafted with bits of wood. These are usually made with solid wood so if you decide to buy one, make sure you have a number of people to carry it inside the house due to its weight. Antique closets are made of separate pieces that are assembled together into the final unit. They mostly have a huge solid base and a three door unit built on it. Resting on this three-compartment closet would be the unit head. This is a simple structure but being heavy it is a difficult task to put them together. The antique closet requires maintenance though, so if you take care of it and polish it every now and then it would even last for generations. Today, however, such heavy closets are generally avoided for various reasons.

An interesting observation is that closets are not just used to store the usual stuff. There are water closets as well, especially used in the olden days. If you were told that water closets are also known as toilets it will give the exact picture. It is usually a small room with a toilet and sometimes a washbasin. One could guess that in the early days one did not have a bigger place than a closet to build the toilet. One probably had to bring and fill in the water in the tank maybe that is why it was called a water closet.
