How to Restore Metal on Old Cars
- 1). Look at the body of the car carefully and identify the types of metal used on the vehicle. Car bodies are typically made from steel, but you may also have chrome and aluminum components on the car. Each type of metal requires a different treatment.
- 2). Rub distilled white vinegar on any chrome surfaces and let the vinegar sit for several minutes. Before the vinegar dries, quickly rub the liquid around on the chrome with a piece of aluminum foil, using the dull side. This rubs off dirt and other debris, while polishing the chrome.
- 3). Mix equal parts cream of tartar and warm water. Rub the solution over any aluminum components on the old car and let sit until the mixture dries. Gently wipe it away with a damp cloth. The mixture helps remove oxidation and buildup on the metal.
- 4). Sprinkle salt around the body of the car and pour distilled white vinegar on top of the salt. Rub the mixture around with your hands or a cloth. The salt gently buffs away any rust clinging to the car body and then washes away with water.
- 5). Apply metal polish to the metal surfaces of the car and gently buff the surfaces with a soft cloth. The metal polish restores the natural shine to the metal and protects it against future damage. Wipe off any excess polish once you finish.
