Starting a new century of Microsoft Windows, Windows 2000 Professional featured a broad variety of additions, such as Plug and Play, where you could simply plug in a device to a computer, which sensed the device and, more often than not, the device name. Knowing some of the tips and tricks in Windows 2000 Pro can help save you time and increase your enjoyment of the Windows 2000 experience. - You may want to turn on StickyKeys, which allows you to press one key at a time, instead of pressing three keys at once, such as when you press "Control," "Alt" and "Delete" to open Task Manager, for example. To enable StickyKeys, click on "Start," "Settings" then "Control Panel." Double-click on "Accessibility Options" then select the check box by "Use StickyKeys" on the tab labeled "Keyboard." Change the settings for StickyKeys by clicking on "Settings" on the Keyboard tab.
- When you want to keep the startup programs in the startup folders from running and make the startup process faster, turn on your computer, then press "Enter" or select "OK" in the dialog box labeled "Log On to Windows." Hold down the "Shift" key on your keyboard while Windows 2000 starts.
- You can see a preview of a picture or image, if desired, by clicking on "Start" then "Windows Explorer." Double-click on "My Pictures" then on the folder containing the picture. Click on the name of the picture. You will see a preview of the image or picture in the Image Preview window located left of the file list.
- Windows 2000 Pro offers you a startup option called "Last Known Good," which starts your computer with the drivers and registry information Windows 2000 saved since the last time you shut down your computer. If you made any changes since you started your computer, you will lose them when performing this process. Last Known Good gives you the opportunity to recover your computer from a problem before your last successful startup, such as startup issues or problems after installing a new driver or application. You will not be able to resolve missing files or missing driver issues with this option, however. To use Last Known Good, restart your computer then press "F8" on your keyboard when you see the instruction, "Please Select the Operating System to Start." On the screen, you will see options in the Windows 2000 Advanced Options menu. Highlight "Last Known Good Configuration," using the up or down arrows, then press "Enter" to choose it.
