    • 1). Cover windows, doors, and trim with low tack painter’s tape and newspaper. Cut around the tape with a utility knife to create a sharp line between the Hardiplank and the tape.

    • 2). Lay tarps down in the areas where you will be painting. Turn your garden hose to the highest pressure setting. Rinse the Hardiplank with clean water to remove dust and particles. Let the siding dry.

    • 3). Pour multiple cans of paint into one large bucket. Paint tends to vary slightly by batch. Stir 3 to 4 gallons of paint together with a large stir stick to create a more uniform paint color.

    • 4). Dip a good quality trim brush into the paint. Trim the edges of the siding and anywhere that can’t be reached with a roller. Choose 100 percent acrylic paint. Work on a 12-by-12 foot area, or a single wall, at a time.

    • 5). Pour the paint into a paint pan. Roll your paint roller through the paint, removing the excess from the roller at the empty end of the pan. Roll the paint onto the siding in a thin coat. Let the paint dry.

    • 6). Apply a second coat of paint if necessary. James Hardie Siding Products only recommends one coats. Examine your siding to make sure that one coat provides adequate paint coverage.
