Using Bleach in Swimming Pools
- 1). Test the chlorine level in your pool to determine how much bleach to add. Find out how many gallons of water your pool holds. An average 20-by-40 foot pool holds about 30,000 gallons of water.
- 2). Put on protective gloves and goggles before handling the bleach. Measure out an appropriate amount of bleach to bring your pool to the desired chlorine level. One gallon of bleach is equal to 3/4 lb. of calcium hypochlorite and will raise the chlorine level in a 30,000 gallon pool by 2 ppm (parts per million).
- 3). Pour the bleach directly into your pool's skimmer and allow the bleach to cycle through the water for at least an hour before swimming in it. Test your pool water one last time before jumping in. Your chlorine level should be anywhere between 2 and 4 ppm for safe swimming conditions.
