    • 1). Put on a pair of leather work gloves to protect your hands from blisters. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying rock chips.

    • 2). Position the tip of a 6-foot-long pry bar in the center of the rock. Straddle the hole.

    • 3). Raise the bar up about 15 inches and then slam it down into the stone. Repeat this process until you have chipped out about 3 or 4 inches of stone.

    • 4). Slip a metal digging bar down into the hole in the rock. The digging bar should be long enough to protrude at least three feet out of the hole in the ground.

    • 5). Strike the end of the digging bar with a sledgehammer until the rock splits in two. Continue creating holes in the rock with the long pry bar and then splitting the rock with the digging bar and sledgehammer. Do this until all remnants of the rock have been removed and the fence post can be installed.
