How to Carve Walking Sticks or Canes
- 1). Search the forest for the right wood. Some of the best types of wood are cherry, maple and willow. Your stick should be about 1 1/2 inches in diameter to be strong enough to bear a person's weight.
- 2). Cure the green wood for at least six months in a garage or shed. Some enthusiasts say give the wood a year to dry for every inch of thickness.
- 3). Plan your design while you wait for the wood to dry. If it's a gift for a friend, create something that caters to her interest, like fishing or books. Choose a design you are interested in for yourself so you don't get bored with the carving process.
- 4). Chip, carve and bore away at the prepared stick using wood carving tools. Make sure the handle has a slight curve to fit the palm.
- 5). Stain the finished product if desired and fit a rubber tip at the bottom of the walking stick for stability.
