    • 1). Shake out your small wool shag rug to remove dust and dirt. It will also make it fluffy again. Do this when you clean your home, about once every week or two.

    • 2). Vacuum your carpet using an attachment on the attachment hose. You should not use one with a rotating brush as the strands may get caught, damaging the rug.

    • 3). Hand wash your rug using a mild wool soap, such as Eucalan Wool Wash. Test on an inconspicuous spot before cleaning to make sure it does not damage the color of your rug. Follow the manufacturer's directions, but usually you mix about a teaspoon of wool wash to a gallon of room temperature water and soak your rug for about fifteen minutes. A laundry sink or the bathtub is a good place to do this. Then gently squeeze out the excess water. If your rug is too large to clean in this manner, then you will need to call a professional carpet cleaner who specializes in wool rugs.

    • 4). Wash your carpet in the gentle cycle of your washing machine instead of hand washing, if preferred and if your shag pile carpet is small enough. Use the wool wash, following dosing instructions on the label as different brands will have different potencies. Use only cold water.

    • 5). Air dry your carpet by hanging it up or laying it across some chairs. Do not air dry in the sun.
