Becoming a Translator
Proverbs 10:19
When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise...
All through God's Word we are warned not to unleash the monster in our mouths called the tongue. The bible tells us that death and life are in the power of our tongues (Proverbs 18:21). We need to grab hold of the fact that our words can have an overwhelming impact not only on our own circumstances but on each and every person around us. Our words can cheer others up or send them into despair. Our words can comfort and our words can destroy. Our words are what the enemy uses against us to curse our lives rather than declare the blessing of God over our lives.
God showed me a little trick that I use daily against the devil. I've learned to turn the tables on him and I admit that I have a good time doing it. I've learned to become a "translator". In the world, we use translators primarily when we have two people who don't speak the same language. So, let's say you have one person that speaks French and another that speaks English. The Frenchman would speak to the translator who in turn would speak to the Englishman in English telling what the Frenchman said. Then the Englishman would speak to the translator in English. The translator would then turn and speak to the Frenchman in French what the Englishman said, thus acting as a go between for the two individuals.
We as Christians can also become translators. When the enemy whispers some negative comment in our ear and we're tempted to say something derogatory, negative, or destructive, translate the thought and only allow positive words to come out of your mouth. Whatever the enemy places in your head, use it as an opportunity to "translate" the thought into kind words. When the waiter at your favorite restaurant is taking longer than normal to bring you your favorite meal and you're tempted to make a negative comment, instead say, "Lord I thank you that the staff here are taking their time to prepare my meal perfectly for me". When you go outside to find that your car won't start, instead of cursing it, say, Father I thank you that my car didn't break down miles away from home, in the middle of traffic, or in the middle of a snow storm and I thank you that you have a plan and a purpose in this that I may not be able to see right now, but I trust you in this. When you're tempted to gripe about how dirty the carpet in the living room is, instead say, Lord I thank you so much for this beautiful home you've given us to live in.
In my life when those close to me who know I practice this hear me blessing everyone, when they hear kind words profusely coming out of my mouth, and when they hear me going out of my way to encourage others, they know that I am under the most pressure from the enemy to say something negative than normal. They know that with every negative thought, I will only allow positive words out of my mouth.
Make a pledge only to allow blessings and words of gratitude out of your mouth and not cursing and negative words that don't edify. Once you purpose to become a translator, only allowing good to come out of your mouth, you will be amazed at how your attitude will change and how much of a blessing you will become to those around you.
