    • 1). Update to the latest version of iTunes and make a backup of your iPhone's iTunes files. Close iTunes when you are done. Write a list of all important information on your device, especially phone numbers that you don't want to lose.

    • 2). Obtain a "pwned" version of iPhone firmware 2.2.1 if you don't already have it saved on your computer. You will need this before you restore your device with the 3.0 firmware.

    • 3). Open iTunes again. Connect your iPhone to your computer with its USB cable. Hold the "Home" and "Power" buttons so that you enter DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.

    • 4). Hold down your "Shift" key and click on the "Restore iTunes" button at the same time. This will display the firmware file for the iPhone. If your device already has the 2.2.1 version firmware, you can skip to Step 6.

    • 5). Eject your iPhone from iTunes. This will disconnect the device from the program, and your phone will now be restored to firmware 2.2.1.

    • 6). Reconnect your iPhone to your computer. Allow iTunes to recognize it, hold down your "Shift" key and click on the "Update" button simultaneously. You should see a prompt for iPhone 3.0 Firmware, which you should click to install. This will successfully upgrade your iPhone to 3.0.
