How to Stay Active When You Don"t Attend Church
Inactivity can result from many things, especially health problems and employment conflicts. If you are not currently active in Church, but want to be connected as much as possible to activities and information, then the following suggestions should help you.
Take Control of Your Digital Information
The Church puts a great deal of information online. Some of it is only accessible via password, but most of it is freely available to anyone.
You need both so you need to do the following:
Sign up for an LDS Account. If you are a member you MUST enter your Membership Record Number (MRN) in order to get access to your local unit and stake information. MRN's can be found on temple recommends and individual ordinance summaries (IOS). IOS's are often handed out at tithing settlement. You may be able to find your MRN on some other church record you have.
If you have none of these items, then call your local leadership or one of the clerks. Any of them can supply you with your MRN. They likely will not be able to give it to you via email or the phone. Request that they hand deliver or mail it to you. It is this important. Do not be afraid to ask. Once armed with your MRN you can take action.
- Go to LDS.org.
- Look in the top right hand corner for My Account and Ward.
- Click on it.
- Select Account Settings
Edit Your Account Settings
When you are finally on the system, edit your profile information. There should be four separate categories:
- Account: You can select a username, display name and more.
- Contact and Recovery: These are emails and phone numbers. Also, you decide if you want to keep any of this information private or visible to other members, leadership or no one at all.
- Membership: If your MRN has not been added to your LDS Account, you can do it here.
- Email Subscriptions: See the following section.
You also need to go to your local directory and update your personal information. This is like a roster of names and contact information for everyone in your ward. From LDS.org, click on My Account and Ward and then click on Directory.
You can also access the Calendar, Newsletter and Maps to review other information about your local unit. If you subscribe to any of the local calendars, you can receive email notices when events are added.
Sign Up for Church Information and Newsletters
Under the Email Subscriptions, check them all to discover what is available. After you know what they are, you can modify your choices if you need to. The Inspiration and News category will include emails direct from the First Presidency. These started going out in December, 2014.
Opt to get other digital information like the following:
- Daily Messages
- Official Social Media Posts
- Official Podcasts and RSS Feeds
Study Scriptures Daily
There is no substitute for daily scripture study!
You need the spiritual power that the scriptures can give you. Besides reading them, there are a host of other digital options available to you.
All the manuals for Seminary and Institute are online. Use these resources to really make your scripture study meaningful.
Keep Up to Date on Church Lessons and Other Material
If your local unit is putting its lesson schedules online, you can access them under My Account and Ward on LDS.org and clicking on Lesson Schedules. If they are not, then keep up with what the Church is doing by accessing the Manuals page. You will find all curriculum guidance there.
All lesson manuals are online. You do not have to buy them. It is the same with church magazines. They are all online too.
Be a Digital Volunteer
If you are not currently attending church, you will not have a church calling. So, give yourself one by signing up to be a digital volunteer.
All digital volunteer opportunities are handled through the Vineyard website and the Create! website. This includes indexing for family history resources.
Start or Continue Doing Your Family History
Family history, also referred to as genealogy, is a popular hobby worldwide. The Church provides massive resources for doing family history work online. Take advantage of everything and discover your family tree.
Request Home and Visiting Teachers
Even if you do not attend church, you can be visited in your home by your home teachers and your visiting teachers. Both sets should visit at least once monthly. Home teachers are priesthood holders and they visit everyone in a ward or branch. Visiting teachers only visit adult sisters.
Ask to Receive the Sacrament
You need permission from your local bishop or branch president to receive the sacrament in your home. Usually, your home teachers or the full time missionaries can administer it to you. There is no harm in asking!
All these suggestions should help keep you spiritually engaged and active. Making the transition back to attending church in the future should be much easier for you.
