How to Sharpen Jointer Knives

    • 1). Place the sharpening stone on a stable surface such as a table.

    • 2). Apply the appropriate lubricant to the sharpening stones. Oil stones need a few drops of oil on the surface of the stone, while water stones must be soaked in water for 20 minutes before use. The lubricant washes away any small metal shavings that could damage the stone.

    • 3). Lap the back of the jointer knives. Place the flat side of the jointer knife on the sharpening stone and rub it on the surface of the stone. Apply firm but moderate pressure to the blade as you rub it on the stone.

    • 4). Flip the blade over and hone the bevel--the angled face of the blade. Place the bevel on the stone and pinch the blade between your fingers and thumbs. Your fingers should be on the back of the blade, just above the sharpening stone. Move the knife over the stone, using a figure-eight motion.

    • 5). Flip back and forth several times between the bevel and back of the knife.

    • 6). Repeat the process, using a finer-grit sharpening stone, if desired.
