How to Make a Repair XP Bootable Disc
- 1). Download a boot CD image. In order to create the bootable disc, you need to first download the disc image to burn to a disc. There are numerous free boot CDs online. UltimateBootCD.com is a trustworthy source. There are also paid boot CDs offered by antivirus software companies. The downloaded image will be in the ISO image file format; save the file to the C: folder.
- 2). Download and install Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools. Windows XP, by default, does not include native support for burning ISO images to disc. Installing this Windows resource toolkit adds that functionality.
- 3). Insert the blank CD into the computer's CD burning drive. Make note of the burner's drive letter.
- 4). Open the "Run" dialog via the "Start" menu, type "cmd" and press "Enter" to open the command prompt.
- 5). Type "cdburn.exe D: C:\bootcd.iso" (where "D:" is the letter of the CD burner and "bootcd.iso" is the full name of the downloaded Boot CD image). Press "Enter" and the image will be burned to the CD. The command prompt window will display the progress. When the process is complete, remove the bootable XP disc and properly label and store it.
