How to Install Dentil Molding
- 1). Begin installation on the prominent wall -- the first wall people see when they enter the room. Measure the prominent wall's length and determine if you need to butt two pieces of dentil molding together or if one piece stretches the full length.
- 2). Turn one piece of dentil molding upside down and place it on the miter saw table. Lift the piece up so the flat edge on the bottom rests against the back of the table and the flat edge on the top rests against the table. Set the miter saw to a 45-degree angle and cut approximately 1 inch off the molding's end.
- 3). Position the dentil molding against the wall and ceiling. Secure it in place with a pneumatic and finishing nails. Measure the distance from the molding to the wall corner and transfer this measurement to a second piece of dentil molding.
- 4). Turn the second piece of molding upside down and rest it on the miter saw table the same way you rested the first piece. Cut through the dentil molding. Lift this piece up to the wall and fit the cut end tightly against the first piece's cut end. Secure it in place with a pneumatic nailer and finishing nails.
- 1). Cut dentil molding to fit around corners using a 45-degree miter cut. Lay the piece of molding on the miter saw table the same way you did in the Section 1. Cut the molding at a 45-degree angle. Set this piece aside.
- 2). Rotate the miter saw so the blade points in the opposite direction but still makes a 45-degree cut. Position a second piece of dentil molding on the saw table and make the cut.
- 3). Lift one of the cut pieces up to the corner and secure it in place with finishing nails from a pneumatic nailer. Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the second piece's cut end. Place the cut end against the first piece's cut end and secure the second piece to the wall with finishing nails from a pneumatic nailer.
- 1). Cut one piece of dentil molding straight across the end to make a 90-degree cut. Tilt the miter saw to a 45-degree angle, point the blade toward either the right or left depending on what side of the corner the 90-degree cut is on.
- 2). Lay a second piece of dentil molding on the miter saw table. Make the 45-degree cut through the molding.
- 3). Trace the 45-degree cut edge with a pencil to make it more apparent. Place a coping saw against the top edge. Tilt the coping saw so the blade angles behind the molding. Follow the darkened edge to cut the wood off from behind the edge.
- 4). Lift the first piece of molding up to the wall and place the 90-degree cut tight in the corner. Secure the molding in place with a pneumatic nailer and finishing nails. Position the second piece of molding up to the first piece. Push the cut end tight against the first piece's face. Secure the second piece in place with a pneumatic nailer and finishing nails.
