    • 1). Lay the sharpening stone on top of a towel, with the coarse side facing up. The towel will keep the stone in place while you sharpen the knife.

    • 2). Hold the knife so the blade faces away from you. The beveled edge of the blade should be flat against the stone.

    • 3). Press down on the blade and slowly rub it across the surface of the stone, from the base of the blade, up to the tip. Repeat this motion 10 to 12 times. Flip the knife over and repeat the process on the other side.

    • 4). Run your finger against the edge of the blade to make sure it is sharp enough for your needs. If necessary, sharpen the blade more.

    • 5). Hold a sharpening steel with the handle at the top and the end of the rod pressed against a counter top or cutting board.

    • 6). Hold the bottom edge of the knife blade at a 20 degree angle against the top of the rod. Slowly slide the knife blade against the rod and simultaneously pull the knife back, toward your body, until you reach the tip of the knife. Try to time it so the tip of the knife and the bottom of the rod meet at the same time.

    • 7). Repeat the process for the other side of the blade. Do this 10 times for each side of the blade. This will sharpen the knife even more, but more importantly, it will remove any tiny pieces of scrap metal.
