How to Repair the Ignition Coil on a 1999 Toyota 4Runner
- 1). Remove the negative cable from the battery.
- 2). Use a socket to remove the two coil mounting bolts.
- 3). Label the two wires that attach to the coil, and remove them. Both of these wires easily pull off the coil. One wire plugs into the top, and the other plugs into the side. The bottom wire is a harness with several wire. The top wire is a single, insulated cable. Pull the coil out of the spark plug cylinder.
- 4). Attach the two wires to the new coil.
- 5). Put the coil back in place, and attach the two mounting bolts.
- 6). Replace the cover by snapping it into place over the coil. Re-attach negative battery cable.
- 1). Detach the negative battery cable.
- 2). Remove the heat shield. This is a plastic cover that attaches with a plastic lift tap on each side.
- 3). Label the electrical connectors, and use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that hold them in place. There is one each at the top and the bottom.
- 4). Remove the two coil mounting screws with a Phillips screwdriver, located on top of the coil. One is directly in the middle, and the other is slightly to the right of the first. Detach the coil from the distributor housing
- 5). Reattach the new coil, and tighten the mounting bolts.
