How to Change Your Voice

    • 1). Choose the accent you want to mimic and listen to it. Movies with actors using the accent are good because you get to hear a range of emotion and speech patterns.

    • 2). Listen to the sound recordings or watch the movies. Note whether the vowels are longer or shorter than your current accent. Listen to the rhythm of speech; is it faster or slower than yours is? Listen for pitch and determine whether it is higher or lower than your current accent.

    • 3). Practice the accent. Listen to the accent, pause the recording, and repeat a sentence or two. Rewind the recording and listen to the phrase again, comparing your accent to the actor's. Practice the phrase again, paying attention to vowels, cadence and pitch.

    • 4). Continue practicing phrases until you are familiar with the accent. Practice it with and without recordings, repeating phrases to your reflection in a mirror. Note how your mouth moves and how the muscles feel when you use the accent.

    • 5). Practice talking to your reflection without recordings. Have conversations with your reflection. You may feel silly, but the practice helps. Talk to yourself in the mirror for a week or two, until the accent comes and goes with little effort.

    • 6). Test your accent by going to a mall or store you have never visited before. Use your accent to talk to store employees, order food and ask strangers the time. If people ask where you are from, your accent is pretty successful. If they ask about a specific region (for instance, "Are you from England?" for your new English accent), you are quite successful.
