How to Paint an Aluminum Radiator
- 1). Open windows and doors to ensure your work area is sufficiently ventilated.
- 2). Place masking tape or painter's tape over nearby light switches and outlets. If you are using spray paint, you'll need to put plastic sheeting over nearby windows and walls to protect them from the spray. Place a drop cloth on the floor, or put newspapers beneath the radiator if you cannot maneuver the drop cloth beneath it.
- 3). Sand the radiator, if necessary, to create a smooth surface. Mix soap and warm water in a bucket and use a sponge to wash the radiator thoroughly.
- 4). Rinse off all soap residue with a clean sponge and water, and dry the radiator with a clean towel.
- 5). Put on safety glasses and a painter's respirator. Apply spray or brush-on primer if the paint you are using indicates a primer is necessary.
- 6). Shake the can, if using spray paint, and begin spraying one end of the radiator. Move the paint can evenly, up and down, so the paint doesn't drip, applying a thin coat of paint. If using brush-on paint, mix the paint in the can with a wooden stirrer and then brush a thin first coat on the radiator.
- 7). Apply a second coat after the first has dried.
