- Potassium poses an increased risk of side effects in patients who ingest more than 90mq of potassium per day in both supplements and food, according to RxList. Some foods that are high in potassium include bananas, raisins, beets, beans, turkey, fresh orange juice and canned grapefruit juice.
- Some drugs used to treat high blood pressure cause increases in potassium levels and may not be safe to take with potassium supplements, including duiretics, captopril, losartan, valsartan, enalapril, lisinopril and ramipril.
- Having too much potassium in your blood stream causes a condition called hyperkalemia, which has the potential to damage your cardiovascular system or cause death, cautions the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Symptoms of hyperkalemia include irregular heartbeat, slow or absent pulse, paralysis or confusion.
- Pregnant women should not take in more than 40mq of potassium per day from both supplements and food, according to RxList. If you have a history of hyperkalemia, cardiovascular disease or gastrointestinal disorders that slow digestion, it is not be safe for you to take potassium supplements.
