Golf - What You Should Really Know to Improve Your Long Game and Accuracy

103 11
Professional golfers think that the long game is all a bit of an exercise in puffing out the chest and showing off a little.
How else would the saying, 'Drive for show, putt for dough' have come into being? In a way they are right.
A good drive more than any other aspect of golf emphasizes the difference between the average player and the golfer they aspire to become.
For the newcomer to the game of the moderate golfer who wishes to improve, the long game should not in any way be about showing off.
You should aim simply to improve your driving technique so that you can regularly hit the fairway and carry the ball around 200 yards or 183 meters off the tee.
You should also try to improve your long game so that you can hit your approach shots on to the green around 50 per cent of the time.
Although a competent short game can often compensate for errant driving and approach play, improving your long game is without doubt the quickest way to improve your handicap.
If you can carry the ball a reasonable distance off the tee with a good level of accuracy, the rest of the hole becomes easier because your next shot is played with a shorter and more controllable club.
That inevitably means that you have a better chance of hitting the ball on to the green and closer to the hole.
Improving the quality of your long game will thus have a knock on effect on the rest of your game, inevitably leading to lower scores.
If you are a man, part of your long game problem may not be about technique at all but about keeping your macho tendencies in check.
The next time you watch Tiger Woods, do not admire the flight of the ball and how far it travels, but study the things from which you can learn.
For example, how they concentrate, the rhythm of their action, and the variety of clubs that they use to cope with the differing demands of each hole.
So forget fear and step on to the tee with a spring in your stride and confidence in your heart.
