Ceramic Tile & Grout Cleaning Tips

Ceramic tile and grout can become stained and dull from dirt, dust, soap scum, minerals in the water and chemicals. There are tricks to cleaning a ceramic tile floor, countertop or shower. But don't look for expensive cleaning products. Common household items work just as well. - Sweep ceramic floors regularly. Removing dust, dirt and debris from ceramic tile helps prevent it from getting dull. High traffic areas should be swept daily, while areas less prone to mess can be cleaned weekly.
- Mop ceramic tile floors weekly. Soap and water is fine for light cleaning. Heavily soiled floors can be mopped with a cleanser made from 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup ammonia, 1/4 cup borax and one gallon of warm water. Mop the floor with the cleanser and rinse the floor with clean water. Dry the floor of excess water with a old bath towel. Do not use abrasive cleansers or scrubbing tools; a soft mop or cloth is best.
- Stained grout or grout with mold and mildew can be cleaned with bleach or vinegar. Mix one cup of bleach or vinegar and one cup of water in an empty spray bottle. Shake well before each use and spray directly on stained grout. Let the cleanser sit for 15 minutes, scrub grout with a soft-bristle toothbrush and rinse it clean with water. Do not use bleach on colored grout.
