    Remove The Fake Desktop Background (Windows XP)

    • 1). To check (and fix) your background, open the start menu and click Control Panel. If your prankster was particularly clever, your start menu may also be hidden, in which case press "CTRL+ESC" to open your start menu.

    • 2). In the Control Panel, click "Appearance and Themes."

    • 3). Click the "Change the Desktop Background" option under "Pick a Task."

    • 4). A "Display Properties" window, which pictures a computer monitor, will appear. If the image on the monitor is of a blue screen, change the background option by selecting one of the other backgrounds listed (or choose "None"). The image on the monitor will change to the new background. Click "OK" to set the new background.

    • 1). To check (and fix) your background, open the start menu and click "Control Panel." Your start menu may also be hidden, in which case press "CTRL+ESC" to open your start menu.

    • 2). In the Control Panel, click "Appearance and Personalization."

    • 3). Click "Personalization."

    • 4). Click "Change Desktop Background."

    • 5). Select any image to replace the bluescreen image and click "Save Changes."

    Restore Your Start Menu (Windows XP/Windows Vista and Windows 7)

    • 1). In the event that your start menu and taskbar are also hidden from view, restore these to visibility by returning to the Control Panel.

      In the Control Panel, click "Appearance and Themes."

    • 2). Click "Taskbar and Start Menu" under "Pick a Control Panel Icon."

    • 3). In the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window, make sure "Auto-hide the Taskbar" is unchecked. Click "OK" to save any changes.

    Restore Your Icons (Windows XP)

    • 1). Now that the bluescreen has been removed, you need to restore your desktop icons to their former positions. To restore your icons, right-click anywhere on your desktop.

    • 2). In the pop-up menu that appears, select "Arrange Icons By."

    • 3). In the sub-menu, click "Show Desktop Icons." A check mark will appear to show that you've enabled that option.

    Restore Your Icons (Windows Vista and Windows 7)

    • 1). Now that the bluescreen has been removed, you need to restore your desktop icons to their former positions. To restore your icons, right-click anywhere on your desktop.

    • 2). In the pop-up menu that appears, select "View."

    • 3). In the sub-menu, click "Show Desktop Icons." A check mark will appear to show that you've enabled that option.

    Bluescreen Screen Saver (Windows XP)

    • 1). To remove this screen saver, open your Start menu and open the Control Panel.

    • 2). In the Control Panel, click "Appearance and Themes."

    • 3). Click the "Choose a Screen Saver" option under "Pick a Task."

    • 4). In the "Display Properties" window that appears, select the "Screen Saver" tab.

    • 5). In the drop down menu, choose a different screen saver or choose "None." Click "OK" to save your changes.

    Bluescreen Screen Saver (Windows Vista and Windows 7)

    • 1). To remove this screen saver, open your Start menu and open the Control Panel.

    • 2). In the Control Panel, click "Personalize."

    • 3). Click the "Change Screen Saver" option.

    • 4). In the drop down menu, choose a different screen saver or choose "None." Click "Save Changes."
