    Repairing Fabric Covered Flat-Back Pins

    • 1). Flip the pin over. The pin's flat-back closure mechanism will be facing you. Pin-backs with a fabric cover to hide any glue or stitching generally comes undone over time as well as frays.

    • 2). Remove the fabric cover with your seam ripper carefully. Snip away any frays with your pinking shears. For instance, if you have a circular cover, cut around the cover in a circle pattern.

    • 3). Remove any dried glue by carefully running your fingernail underneath the glue. If the fabric begins to pull with the glue, do not tear it away. Cut away the larger portion of the dried glue with your scissors.

    • 4). Dip a clean terry cloth towel in hot water, and dab it onto the remaining hot glue. It will begin to loosen and fall away.

    • 5). Reattach your pin-back by adding a thin bead of hot glue onto the flat-back with your glue gun. Make sure it does not drip onto the closure mechanism which needs to be free of glue. Place it on the back of your brooch or jewelry item. Let dry your brand's recommended time.

    • 6). Open the closure mechanism, and position the fabric backing.

    • 7). Thread a hand sewing needle using matching thread. Hand stitch the fabric backing by passing the needle in a loop-like motion. For example, if your brooch is a fabric flower, you will pass the thread over the mechanism and into the flower's back petal, leaf or around the stem. You will repeat this several times until the fabric backing is stitched all around and secure. Keep in mind that the only exposed section of the pin's flat-back will be the closure.

    Re-Stringing Wire Flat-Back Pins

    • 1). Repeat section 1, steps 1 through 4.

    • 2). Open the loose wire knot, which you can usually find tied around one end of the flat-back pin with your round nose pliers. You will need to re-insert the wire end through the flat-back opening.

    • 3). Form a loop with the pliers and pull the wire end through. Make sure you securely knot one end through the flat-back opening.

    • 4). Pull the wire gently through the remaining two openings in an over-and-under pass with your pliers. Make sure that you string any loose beads or pin accessories before pulling the wire through the remaining openings.

    • 5). Form another loop. Pull the wire end through until you form a secure knot. Cut away any excess wire with your wire cutters.
