How to Tile Diamond Patterns on Wall Tile

    • 1). Measure and mark the middle of each edge of the wall. Use your chalk snapline to divide the wall into four even squares from the marks, with two intersecting lines, one running vertically and one horizontally (so there is a large plus sign dividing the wall).

    • 2). Use your snapline to mark an X over the plus-sign, running two diagonal lines through the middle of the two straight lines you made before. One diagonal line runs from top left to bottom right and the other from top right to bottom left. Use your tape measure to ensure that the two diagonal lines are the same distance from the two straight lines on all sides. Use your carpenter's square to ensure that the two diagonal lines are exactly 90 degrees to each other. Adjust them if necessary.

    • 3). Spread tile mortar on the middle of the intersection of the X with your mortar trowel, covering enough of the wall to accommodate more than four tiles. (The lines of the intersection will still be visible through the rows of mortar that are created by the notches in the mortar trowel.) Set four tiles into place at the intersection, putting spacers between them.

    • 4). Spread more mortar and hang more tiles, building out from the middle toward the sides of the wall. Cut the tiles at the edges as necessary, using a tile cutter to make the diagonal cuts you'll need to get them to fit against the wall.

    • 5). Let the tiles set overnight. Pull out the spacers.

    • 6). Grout the wall starting at the top, using your grout float to press the grout into the spaces between the tiles and scraping it off the surface. Use a damp sponge to wipe off the excess grout from the surface.
