Putty Knife

• Putty knives are fundamental tools professional painters use to eliminate peeling and chipping paint. Metallic putty knives are well suited for removing failing paint from durable surfaces, such as exterior wood, brick, concrete and metal. Unfortunately, they can scar sensitive surfaces, such as fiberglass, plastic and smooth interior wood furniture and trim. To remove flaking paint from these items, use a flexible, plastic putty knife.
  
  

Pull Scraper

• Pull scrapers are effective at removing stubborn chipping paint from durable surfaces. Unlike putty knives, which are intended for removing relatively large strips of peeling and flaking paint, pull scrapers are able to quickly detach tightly clinging paint particles. If you need to eliminate a large area of chipping paint, opt for a pull scraper.
  
  

Sandpaper

• Sometimes failing paint particles are so small that even a pull scraper cannot loosen them. To remove stubborn patches of powderlike paint, use a low-grit sandpaper. You can also use sandpaper to smooth the edges of existing paint that will not come free. This will encourage a smoother appear upon repainting.
  
  

Razor Blade

• If you try to use sandpaper, putty knives or pull scrapers to remove paint from glass, noticeable damage is likely to occur. Razor blades are ideal for removing dried paint from glass doors, tables and windows. For best results, hold the blade at a low angle.
  
  

Warnings

• Improper scraping technique can lead to severe damage. When removing old, failing paint from wood, be sure to sand and scrape in the direction of the wood grain. Pull scrapers can carve large chunks from wood siding. Do not pull the scraper against the wood grain, or severe splintering may occur. Don't use metal scrapers to remove paint from fiberglass or vinyl unless you plan to repaint the surface, or you may carve scratches into the material.
