Can I Leave the Concrete Backer Board After Removing the Floor Tiles?
- Inspect the concrete backer board for any signs of mold or moisture damage. If moisture and mold are present, removal of the concrete backer board is necessary. Also, inspect for hollow areas or damage from tile removal. Concrete backer board removal is necessary if the boards are damaged.
- For concrete backer board affixed with screws, simply unscrew the sheets to remove them. For nail-affixed concrete board, pry the boards loose with a hammer and crowbar.
- Trowel a thinset "skim coat" (thin layer of thinset) on the concrete backer board surface to smooth out rough areas and provide a better bond. Make sure that you clean the concrete backer board with a sponge and clean water before doing so.
