This article discusses abstract American painter Rothko, who has left us with a powerful legacy and impressive back catalogue of paintings from the 20th century.

Mark Rothko is best remembered for highly abstract, simplied pieces which used bold colours, never many in any one painting. His work contrasts massively against that of another abstractionist, namely Jackson Pollock who would use much more colour and detail in his paintings.

The 20th century saw a huge amount of change with in the accepted styles of art, with so many new ideas coming in and changing traditional thinking which had remained relatively constant over previous centuries. There was expressionism, cubism and all sorts of other innovations under the broad umbrella of modern art and these now enjoy huge popularity, all around the world.
