What Tools Are Used For Leather Working?
- The swivel knife is the most commonly used leatherworking tool. It makes decorative cuts that only penetrate through half of the leather. As the leather dries, these cuts open up to display the design. The swivel action of the knife gives the user pinpoint control when making precise cuts.
- The veiner is pressed down against the leather piece to create decorative impressions. They are used to create patterns of leaves or scrolls in a leatherworking piece. Veiners can be purchased in different patterns, sizes and curvatures.
- A seeder tool makes round impressions, such as the center of a flower. Different sizes of seeders are available, with a choice of either a smooth or textured tip.
- A beveler gives a three-dimensional look to your leatherworking piece by pressing down the surrounding areas. The bottom of the beveler has a wedge-shaped piece that pushes down a large surface area all at once.
- The background tool textures and flattens the background areas of your design. Different patterns and sizes are available, from a smooth, square tool to the popular teardrop shape or checkerboard pattern.
