How to Secure an Igniter in a Model Rocket Engine
- 1). Insert the igniter into the engine. The closed-ended tip of the igniter will be covered in a special, flammable substance; the end covered in this substance should be inserted into the funnel-shaped hole of the model rocket engine. Insert the igniter firmly into the engine and apply pressure, though not so much pressure that the igniter breaks.
- 2). Bend the split end of the igniter into a right angle. When you insert the igniter into the engine, the split tip will protrude from the bottom of the engine. While holding the igniter firmly in place, bend the protruding ends until they lie flat against the engine bottom; the tips of the ignition leads (small metal wires) should extend from the engine casing at a 90-degree angle.
- 3). Tape the igniter in place. Although model rocket engines generally come with small plastic cones designed to hold the igniter in place, clear Scotch tape serves to both hold the igniter in place and ensure a snug fit of the engine into its housing. This snug fit will prevent the engine from being discharged from the model rocket when the ejection charge fires. While holding the igniter firmly in place, apply approximately two inches (2") of tape to the bottom of the engine. Since the bottom of the engine is only about 1/4", adhere the remaining tape to the side of the engine casing. The igniter should now be securely in place, and the engine assembly is ready to be inserted into the model rocket's engine housing.
