How to Clean the Throttle on a Chevy Truck
- 1). Unsnap the two hold-down clips located on the air filter housing and remove the air filter. Unplug the Mass Airflow Sensor harness connector. Unscrew the wing nut on the throttle body to remove the air duct attaching the throttle body to the air filter housing. This allows access to the butterfly-type valve inside the throttle body.
- 2). Hold the throttle all the way open and spray the walls of the housing liberally with throttle cleaner spray. Allow the spray to soak in for a few minutes to soften heavy deposits.
- 3). Spray the throttle again and, while holding it open, scrub the walls of the throttle body and the throttle plates with the toothbrush. This will emulsify the deposits, and they can now be cleaned away.
- 4). Spray the throttle body and a clean shop towel with throttle cleaner, and wipe the residue away. Repeat this process as many times as needed to eliminate all of the residue.
- 5). Reinstall the ducting and air filter housing, and plug the Mass Airflow Sensor back in. Hold the throttle pedal all the way down and crank the engine until it starts. It is important to hold the throttle pedal all the way down. This signals the on-board computer to go into "Clear Flood" mode and prevents the engine from flooding.
