How to Increase the Drying Time for Lacquer Thinner

    • 1). Reduce the temperature in the spraying environment. This slows the evaporation rate of the lacquer thinner and enables the lacquer to level out. Reduce the temperature by dimming lights, covering windows or running an air conditioner, but don't use a fan. It increases the evaporation rate.

    • 2). Add lacquer thinner retarder to the thinned lacquer before you spray it on with an air gun. Mix it with a stick in the cup of the gun in the proportion recommended on the container. You can also replace the thinner you are using with one that dries more slowly.

    • 3). Spray a slightly heavier coat of lacquer, as long as you can do it in a way that doesn't produce drips, runs or separation. When spraying lacquer with an air gun, the best way to apply a thick coat is to spray several thin coats in quick succession. Producing a thick coat in this way allows the lacquer to dry more slowly and level better.
