    • 1). Determine if you really need to reinstall Windows. Some problems can be eliminated by running anti-virus or anti-spyware software.

    • 2). Back up your data. This is the most important step. Although many system restore disks offer a repair option that does not overwrite your data, you should never trust this. Back up your entire My Documents folder, and any other files containing information that you do not wish to lose. Save the data on a CD-ROM, flash card or other media. You may also consider uploading the data to a server on the internet (only if the data is not private). If the data is important, the it is best to save it in more than one place. Begin doing this at least a couple of days before you actually intend to reinstall Windows. Take your time and search your hard drive carefully. It is very easy to overlook something that you may deeply miss later on.

    • 3). Gather the installation CDs of all the programs you have installed on your computer. If some are missing, and you do not wish to lose the program, then back it up. Some software vendors will even help you with this, if you can prove that you purchased a valid copy of their product. Begin this process early to give yourself time to be thorough.

    • 4). Locate the System Restore CD that came with your computer. Put it into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

    • 5). Follow the instructions for your system to change the boot order of your computer so that it boots from the CD-ROM drive.

    • 6). Restart your computer. It should now boot from the Restore CD. Several options will appear on your screen. Think carefully. Continuing beyond this point will reinstall Windows, and delete all data and programs from your hard drive. Also be aware, that if your computer did not have the current Windows service packs installed when you bought it, it will not have them when you restore your system. You will have to download and install them again.

    • 7). Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select between options. Choose the option that says "To setup Windows XP now, press Enter."

    • 8). Accept the license agreement, and follow the prompts on the screen to reinstall your operating system.
