How to Hunt With Bows
- 1). Scout the area you plan on hunting in with binoculars and a spotting scope. Scout patiently until you locate game and determine where legal animals are present. You may also locate a game trail and use a tree stand for a stationary hunt.
- 2). Cover your scent by approaching game downwind. Also, use scent cover sprays on your clothing and equipment before approaching an animal. Reduce your visual impact by wearing camouflage and moving at an extremely slow pace.
- 3). Minimize noise by moving as little as possible and by breathing slowly. Wear a thick pair of socks and remove your shoes while stalking game to minimize the amount of sound your feet make on the ground. Also, wear soft clothing to reduce noise as you move.
- 4). Use calls to draw the animal closer to your position. Also use calls and whistles to stop the animal before you make the shot. Draw your bow when the animal is within range. Sixty yards is the maximum distance for most hunters, but shots closer than forty yards are ideal.
- 5). Draw the bow slowly and stop on an anchor point like the jaw or edge of the lip. Focus on your sights and line up the shot on the vital organs of the animal. Exhale and release the arrow to kill the animal. Wait for several minutes before tracking the blood trail.
