What a Steam Cleaner Does

• A steam cleaner is sort of like a vacuum cleaner and works in the same way. The main difference is the incorporation of steam. As you use the vacuum-like unit, steam is also emitted, along with any cleaning solution that you care to use. The combination of suction power and steam lifts residue off the upholstery and removes it from the surface.
  
  

Cleaning Solutions for a Steam Cleaner

• Commercial cleaning solutions are available and designed for use with steam cleaning units. If you're using one of these cleaners, make sure it is labeled safe for use on upholstery. If you prefer to make your own cleaning solution, pour approximately 1 tbsp. of laundry detergent into the steam cleaning canister, and add in 2 tbsp. white vinegar to act as a disinfectant.
  
  

Using a Steam Cleaner on Your Upholstery

• Turn on the steam cleaning unit and let it heat up. Unhook the hose attachment and twist on a flat heat or brush heat attachment. Run the hose attachment over the upholstery, pulling the steam trigger every minute or so to keep an even flow of steam and cleaning solution coming out of the unit. Continue over the upholstery and let it air-dry.
  
  

Upholstered Surfaces to Avoid

• Don't use the steam cleaner on silk, satin or other delicate surfaces. The heat can often damage these delicate fabrics. They should be professionally cleaned instead.
