How to Set Up a Virtual PC in Windows XP

    • 1). Browse to the Microsoft Download center website and download Virtual PC 2007 (see Resources). Save the file to your computer.

    • 2). Browse to the folder where you saved Virtual PC 2007 and double click the setup file to start the installation. Accept the End User License Agreement and follow the on-screen prompts to install the software on your PC.

    • 3). Click "Start" and then "All Programs." Scroll to the "Microsoft Virtual PC" program folder and open it. Click the link for "New Virtual Machine Wizard" to start the application.

    • 4). Click the "Next" button and then select the "Create a virtual machine" option. Click the "Next" button again.

    • 5). Enter a descriptive name for the new virtual machine and click "Next."

    • 6). Select the operating system you plan to install from the "Operating system" list on the next screen, and the click "Next." Click the "Using recommended RAM" option and then "Next" again.

    • 7). Click the "A new virtual hard disk" option, and then click the "Next" button. Type a name for the new virtual disk and click the "Next" button.

    • 8). Click the "Finish" button. Wait for the new virtual machine to display in the Virtual PC console, and then highlight the virtual machine and click the "Start" button in the console window.

    • 9). Wait for the Virtual PC Console to display the message "Reboot and Select proper boot disk or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device."

      Ensure that the window for the virtual machine is active and insert installation CD/DVD into the optical drive of your computer. Press the Enter key.

      Follow the on-screen prompts to install the new operating system on the virtual machine. Close the window for the virtual machine and restart it if prompted to do so.

      Log in to the new virtual machine and operating system by clicking the "Action" button in the virtual machine window. Click the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys and then enter your user name and password. Press the Enter key to log in to the new operating system.

      Install applications in the virtual machine or perform other functions inside the new operating system.
