Planer Instructions

    • 1). Turn the planer on and set the depth adjustment with the crank if there is one. The depth scale is usually on the front of the planer and shows the finished thickness of the piece. Turning the crank clockwise lowers the cutter head, and counterclockwise raises it. One revolution is usually 1/16-inch.

    • 2). Set the material removal gauge by sliding about three inches of wood under the middle of the carriage. Crank the carriage down on the wood so the material removal bar touches the wood. The red arrow will move up the scale and show the amount of wood you will be removing. Choose the carriage height that provides the depth of cut you want.

    • 3). Change the speed selection switch if there is one. Only do this when the planer is running. Use the faster speed for removing thickness, and the slower speed for finishing. Speed relates to the number of cuts per inch and varies the feed rollers. The slower the feed rollers the more cuts.

    • 4). Feed the material into the feed rollers. Allow the rollers to grab the lumber and draw the lumber into the planer. Best results are obtained by planning both sides of the lumber and cutting a little with each pass, rather than chunks at one pass.
