How to Keep Steel Exterior Doors From Mildewing
- 1). Spray the door liberally with a garden hose and scrub off dirt and mold with a brush.
- 2). Poor ¼ cup of bleach and 1 tbsp. of dish-washing soap into a spray bottle filled with water. In a separate spray bottle of water, pour ¼ cup of vinegar with water. This mixture will clean and protect against further mildew growth.
- 3). Spray the door with bleach/dish soap mixture. Use the brush to again scrub the door thoroughly. Be sure to get into all nooks and crannies. Rinse door with hose.
- 4). Cover the door with vinegar solution. Scrub exterior steel door a third time. The vinegar will kill any remaining spores. Rinse.
- 1). Inspect the door on a regular basis. Look in corners, around moldings or other out-of-the-way areas. A small outbreak of mildew or mold will spread quickly.
- 2). Keep the door clean. Once a week, especially in warm and humid weather, spray the door with the vinegar solution and wipe it down.
- 3). Put in a screen door. Allowing air to circulate will keep the moisture levels around the door down.
