    • 1). Put some old newspaper on a table to protect it while you are painting. Place containers of paint on the table, along with paintbrushes. Put the box on the table.

    • 2). Dip a brush into paint with any color other than black to make a background first. For example, use a white or yellow background to make the black face stand out more easily, or use a color that goes with the room's decor, such as yellow or green. Apply paint to all of the sides except for one. Leave the bottom of the box unpainted so it can rest on the newspaper while the other painted sides dry. This may take several hours.

    • 3). Pick up the box when the paint is dry and turn it over. Dip a brush into the paint and apply paint to the one unpainted side. Let it dry. Pick up the box and place it on the table so the surface you want to paint the face on is on top.

    • 4). Sketch the outline of the face with pencil on the box if you don't want to paint the face freehand. Make the shape oval, rounded or angular, depending on the type of face you want to depict. Draw a vertical line to divide the face in half, and draw a horizontal line halfway through the face, dividing it into four equal sections. Draw two eyes on the center horizontal line, with one eye width separating them, and ½-eye width between each eye and the edge of the face. Draw a line above each eye for the eyebrows.

    • 5). Draw the nose in the center, about 1 ½-eye width's below the eyes, with the edges of the nose extending about as far out as the inner edge of each eye. Drop down the distance of a half of an eye width to draw the mouth. Your options include depicting the mouth closed and neutral, or smiling or frowning. Draw ears on the sides of the face, centered on the horizontal line running through the eyes. Finish by drawing an outline to represent the hair in whatever style you prefer. When you are satisfied with the pencil work, you are ready to add black paint.

    • 6). Dip a brush into black paint. Touch the brush against the surface of the box and follow the pencil drawings you made. Paint slowly and deliberately, making a steady line. If you make a mistake, let the paint dry, then paint over it with the color you used for the background. Let the background paint dry, and then carefully paint the black line of the face once more. Let the paint dry.

    • 7). Position the box where people can enjoy looking at it.
