Suppose you were at work, or on a train or bus, at your local club or maybe even at home.
Would you know how to spot if somebody was having a panic attack or not? The thing is, that many symptoms of a panic attack can be quite similar to more life threatening problems.
One of the most common symptoms that panic attack sufferers report are heart palpitations and some even say that they feel like they're having a heart attack.
Here is a list of some of the most common symptoms panic attack sufferers experience:
  • Trembling or The Shakes
  • Feeling Trapped
  • Hyperventilation
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Heart Attack
  • Heavy Sweating
  • Pains in the Stomach
Bearing mind that these are only the most common symptoms...
how could you tell if somebody is having a panic attack rather than say, a heart attack? Well the short answer is that while the attack is going on -- you can't tell the difference.
Even an experienced doctor would have difficulty saying that the person in front of them was having a panic attack instead of a heart attack.
So if you come across anybody having a heart palpitations or anything that looks like a heart attack -- your safest bet is to call the emergency services.
With the milder symptoms such as pains in the stomach or trembling, obviously the need to call the emergency services is pretty small.
What you do need to do however is to make sure that you offer support and consideration towards the person who is having the panic attack.
Most panic attacks will pass quite quickly if someone is given comfort and support while it is going on.
However, there is more that you can do after that panic attack has subsided.
The first thing to do is encourage the sufferer to get proper help in dealing with the panic attacks.
Nobody needs to have their life either controlled or ruined by continually suffering panic attacks.
Modern Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) will help the sufferer gets to the cause of the problem and by solving the cause the symptoms will be dealt with once and for all.
If you are concerned that either you or somebody close to you is having a problem with panic attacks the first thing you need to do is to find out exactly what the symptoms are.
