How to Paint Stone Countertops
- 1). Clean everything from the countertop you'll be painting. This includes any fixtures or appliances. Spray the countertops with all-purpose kitchen or bathroom cleaner and wipe the tops with a clean cloth to ensure the surface is clean.
- 2). Apply strips of painter's tape to cover any areas you don't want painted, like the sink and faucet and the lower portion of the wall where the countertop and wall meet.
- 3). Prepare your stone-textured paint by either shaking the spray can per the manufacturer's directions or stirring the paint can.
- 4). Apply a basecoat to the countertop. If you're using spray paint, hold the can about 9 inches away from the surface and make quick passes with the can. If you're brushing on the paint, apply the stone-textured paint by dabbing the end of the brush in the paint and blotting the paint onto the counter in blotches. Allow the paint to dry before painting at least one more coat over the counter.
- 5). Spray or brush on a coat of clear waterproof sealant over the entire countertop. Only apply one coat, as additional coats may contribute to an undesirable tacky surface. Allow the sealant a full 24 hours to dry before replacing the fixtures and removing the painter's tape.
