How to Paint With a Trowel
- 1). Apply several layers of Gesso to the stretched canvas or wood panel to create a smooth surface for painting. Allow to dry.
- 2). If desired, apply modeling paste to create distinct designs. Apply to the canvas and sculpt into the desired design using a small painting knife. These textures will serve as an under-layer for your painting.
- 3). Using a palette knife, mix texturing medium with your chosen paint colors to create a heavy body paint. The heavier the paint body, the more distinct the textures created with it will be.
- 4). Using the trowel or a large painting knife, apply thick layers of paint to the surface. The design and texture of the painting will be created by the amount of paint and the pressure and direction of the strokes.
- 5). Wipe the knife clean and apply the next paint color. It is important not to allow the first layer of paint to dry, as this inhibits the application of the following layers. Continue this process until the painting is as desired.
- 6). Allow to dry and coat with several layers of clear coat sealant.
