Function

• Preventic is effective in controlling ticks, lice, mites and other pests in animals. It is also used in treating the parasite that causes the skin condition called mange, which is indicated by symptoms of minimal to severe hair loss accompanied by a bacterial infection. Preventic works by quickly paralyzing the tick's mouth, preventing it from attaching to the dog and killing the tick. Preventic does not control or kill fleas.
  
  

Side Effects

• Preventic is a safe and effective drug for treating your dog under the supervision of a veterinarian. However like with any drug it may cause side effects in some animals. These may include an allergic reaction. Preventic should not be used to treat your dog if she has a known allergy to it.
  
  

Allergic Reaction

• An allergic reaction is a serious medical emergency. Remove the collar or discontinue the use of Preventic lotion and seek immediate veterinary medical treatment for signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction in your dog. These include vomiting, excessive itching or a rash along with swelling of the face, mouth or tongue and difficulty breathing.
  
  

Other Side Effects

• These include a sedative effect causing drowsiness and sleepiness for a period of up to 72 hours. Contact your veterinarian for advice about this condition. If you use a Preventic collar for your dog, make sure the collar is properly adjusted and that there is no extra collar hanging for your dog to chew on. Ingestion of Preventic could lead to poisoning and toxicity; symptoms include disorientation, staggering, vomiting and diarrhea.
  
  

Precautions

• Do not use Preventic for your dog without the veterinarian's advice and counsel. Do not use Preventic on dogs less than 12 weeks of age. For safe handling of Preventic, use a rubber glove when applying the collar to your dog. If you are taking a MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor a potent medication used to treat depression) or if you are diabetic, use caution with this product. You must wash your hands thoroughly after applying the collar
  
  

Warning

• Preventic should not be used as a treatment for cats. Use caution when this drug is used on dogs who are diabetic, due to its effect on glucose. People with diabetes should avoid contact with Preventic. Use caution when using Preventic on smaller breed dogs like miniature poodles. To avoid drug interaction, discuss with your doctor any other medications your dog may be taking before administering Preventic.
