How to Write Your Personal Messages in the Sand
- 1). Locate a spot on the beach that is free from crowds. Make sure the section of beach you choose is relatively flat and not hilly. Choose a location that is close enough to the water that the sand is slightly moist, but not so close that the sand is wet.
- 2). Envision a large square or rectangle in which you will write your message. Place a rock on each of the four corners of the envisioned rectangle to serve as markers in order for you to keep your writing even. Remove any large rocks or other debris that may interfere with your message.
- 3). Dig up any uneven areas of sand with the shovel and redistribute the sand so that the writing area is completely flat. Drag the flat side of the shovel back and forth over the sand to create a flat surface. Position the flat side of the shovel at one of the rocks and drag the shovel in a straight line all the way to the rock at the other corner to completely smooth the sand. Continue to make parallel lines from one side to the other until the entire rectangle surface is smooth. Check to make sure that there are no bumps or streaks in the sand.
- 4). Standing outside of the rectangle, insert your chosen writing utensil 3 inches into the sand and pull the utensil towards you in the shape of the first letter.Take care not to step into the rectangle, to avoid footprints in your message. Step back a few feet after the first letter is complete and make sure it is visible, even and the appropriate size. Make any necessary changes by re-smoothing the sand and starting over. Continue with additional letters until the message is complete.
- 5). Use the broom to brush away any stray piles of sand that may have accumulated during the message writing. Brush lightly, taking care not to drag the broom and create marks in the sand. Remove the four rocks on the corners of the rectangle. Photograph your message, if desired.
